New Jersey native Caterina Belle Azzarello-Nichols earned an M.A. from the University of Northern Colorado’s Educational Psychology program. Continuing in the program as a doctoral student, she’s conducting research in mathematics readability and student educational dispositions.

Musical Composition Dissertation Combines Ancient Melodies, Modern Poetry

University of Northern Colorado doctoral student Kay Cypret’s dissertation makes a compelling statement on war while highlighting female narratives from World War I. Cypret began her UNC studies at the start of the pandemic and graduated this past summer from the Music D.A. — Music Composition program. Her dissertation, “A Great War Requiem,” is a seven-movement musical composition that pays homage to the dead. She incorporated diverse materials into the work, from ancient requiem mass texts and melodies to more modern poems.

Jenna Altomare, a doctoral student in the University of Northern Colorado's Social Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity program, is incorporating a social justice lens into her degree. She arrived at UNC determined to provide support for the LGBTQ+ community and has since broadened her scope to a variety of marginalized groups.

Doctoral Candidate Tackles Social Issues Using Data Science

Felix Junior Appiah Kubi is a doctoral candidate at the University of Northern Colorado, where he has two semesters left. Growing up in Ghana, he was fascinated with mathematics and computing — a passion that led him to statistics and data science. Today, as a doctoral candidate in UNC's Applied Statistics and Research Methods program, he's applying advanced statistical methods to address complex societal problems.
